The city of Waukee is an integral part of the Des Moines – West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city has a total population of 13,790 residents and growing at a rapid rate.
The once small rural town of Waukee has become a dynamic suburb of the Des Moines Metro area. There is convenient access to the Des Moines Metropolitan area by frontage roads and freeways. In spite of its rapid growth, the city has continued to maintain its small-town atmosphere.
Waukee continues to grow and maintain its reputation as one of the fastest growing cities in the country. At last count, there are 5,154 households and approximately 5,378 housing units. The local school district serves 7700 students from preschool to high school.
The rapid pace of growth in the area over the last few years means substantial construction. Approximately 65.2 percent of the homes located in Waukee were built between the year 2000 and present day. Homes built between 1980 and 1999 represents another 20.3 percent of the housing in the city.
Floor plans range from 1,000 square feet or less (5.9 percent) to 3600 square feet or more (2.4 percent). The majority of floor plans ranges from 1,400 to 1,800 feet (33.3 percent). Approximately 94.6 percent of homes are single-family units and another 4.2 percent are condominiums. Homeowners represent 84.1 percent, while renters only account for 15.9 percent of residents.
